BREAST AUGMENTATION

Breast Augmentation

WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Breast augmentation is also known as augmentation mammoplasty. The procedure aims to enhance the shape and size of the breasts.

You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation if :

  • You want larger, fuller breasts
  • You want to enhance your cleavage
  • Congenital breast asymmetry ie tuberous breast
  • You want to restore volume to your breasts after weight loss or pregnancy/breastfeeding
  • You want to improve symmetry
  • You want your breasts to be in proportion with your body

THE SURGICAL PROCEDURE
A day stay is usually only required. You can expect to be in hospital for 4-6 hours.

Dr Kirstin Miteff performs two types of breast augmentation procedures:

  • BREAST AUGMENTATION WITH FAT GRAFTING

A fat grafting (fat transfer) breast augmentation is a more natural option for small breast augmentations.

Fat grafting to the breast involves the harvesting and transfer of fat cells to the breasts. The fat cells are harvested via a standard liposuction technique. Most patients choose to remove fat from their hips, thighs and abdomen which in turn helps create a more balanced figure.

The fat cells are then safely injected into the breast tissue to improve the size of the breast and cleavage.

The result is a more natural breast, through a procedure that is less scarring (only tiny incisions are required as the fat is transferred by injection).

  • BREAST AUGMENTATION WITH IMPLANTS

The procedure involves implants being inserted beneath your breasts to enlarge them. The implant type and size depends on factors such as how much bigger you want your breasts to be, your breast anatomy, skin thickness and elasticity, and body type.

Dr Kirstin Miteff will recommend an implant shape and size that will help achieve the cosmetic look you desire.

Implants are cohesive silicone gel, in a round or anatomical (teardrop) shape. During your consultation, you will be able to touch and feel the implants and trial them for sizing and shape.

The safety of breast implants is an issue of concern for women and the safety of our patients remains our number one priority. If you have been considering breast augmentation we encourage you to visit the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons website for the most up-to-date information on breast implants and associated-anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

Breast implants may affect your ability to breastfeed.

Breast augmentation is performed at Lingard Private Hospital or Warners Bay Private Hospital.

BENEFITS OF BREAST AUGMENTATION

  • Improve body proportions
  • Restore volume lost after pregnancy or nursing
  • More symmetrical breasts
  • More clothing options

MEDICARE CRITERIA
A cosmetic augmentation does not have a Medicare rebate however breast asymmetry has a Medicare rebate. Please check with your health care fund if you are covered for this procedure.

With any procedure you choose to undergo, potential risks and complications can occur, and it is vital to understand them before deciding on surgery.

Some possible complications and risks associated with breast augmentation may include:

  • Bleeding or infection
  • Fluid accumulation around the implant after surgery
  • Allergic reaction to suture materials, tape adhesive or other medical materials and lotions
  • Changes in breast and nipple sensation
  • Temporary or permanent areas of numbness
  • Wrinkling of the skin over the implant
  • Keloid, or lumpy scar tissue, which is pink, raised and irregularly shaped. These scars may be inflamed and itchy. There are several possible sites for the incision.
  • Capsular contracture, where firm scar tissue forms around the implant causing it to lose shape and softness
  • Inappropriate implant size
  • Implant rupture or deflation
  • Asymmetry (unevenness) of the breasts
  • Calcium deposits in the scar capsule around the implant
  • Granulomas or lumps in local lymph node tissue formed by leaking silicone
  • Breastfeeding difficulties, including reduced milk supply
Reduced effectiveness of breast cancer screening, since an implant may hide breast tissue (and tumours) during a mammogram
  • Movement of the implants from their original position
  • Further surgery to treat complications
  • Risks of anaesthesia including allergic reaction or potentially fatal cardiovascular complications such as heart attack
  • A blood clot in the deep veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis), which can move to the lungs (pulmonary embolus) or to the brain and may be life threatening

Dr Kirstin Miteff will go into more depth about the associated risks and complications during your consultation.
